History of Faversham Market
There are probably many things you didn’t know about Faversham Market. Did you know that Faversham Market was mentioned in the Domesday Book and that there’s has been a market there for a thousand years? The history of Faversham Market is absolutely fascinating and makes us feel very privileged to be able to trade there each week.
Henry VIII granted the market it’s royal charter in 1546. This enabled the market to trade three times a week – which it still does. This was reaffirmed by James II in 1685.
Faversham Market Place would probably still be recognised by many of the famous historical figures who have visited in the past. Shakespeare, who acted there, and Queen Elizabeth I, who visited the town in 1572. Others who have visited Faversham include James II, and John Wesley who preached here in 1738
A beautiful setting
Located in the heart of Faversham’s historic town centre, with its stilted Guildhall, town pump and cobbled streets, Faversham Market’s setting is perfect. With a backdrop of beautiful old Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings, it’s a popular place for shoppers and visitors alike.
The Market Place is an excellent place to sit and enjoy a drink, be it a pint of local beer or a cup of coffee. In addition to the Market, there is a terrific selection of independent shops and businesses to explore too. The perfect place for buying arts, gifts and local produce.
About Faversham Markets today
Faversham’s Charter Market is held in the Market Place three days a week on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. It’s a great Market for stocking up on food, drink, household items, plants, flowers, gifts, clothes, pet food and more. Every Saturday you can also treat yourself to some excellent craft beer, provided by a rather fine local micro-brewery!
The markets have evolved since the Domesday Book with an additional two town centre Faversham markets. The Best of Faversham market takes place on the first and third Saturday of the month and is located in Preston Street. Stallholders are all local and sell items made, created, grown and produced locally. It’s a great market to shop for artisan and craft items.
Faversham Antiques and Vintage market trades the first Sunday of the month in the Market Place. It hosts antiques specialists from around the continent selling their wide range of furniture, art, jewellery, ceramics, collectibles, vintage clothing and more.
Mad Cat at Faversham Market
Mad Cat has been trading on the Saturday Charter Market at Faversham for a while now. We love to meet our customers and the public to talk about our brewery, beers and how we brew. There is always a great selection of our latest beers available in either bottles or mini-kegs for customers to take away and enjoy at home. We are also starting to sell our fab new range of merchandise at the market too.
The team at Mad Cat is very proud of the Brewery’s Faversham roots and keen to support such a precious local institution as Faversham Market. We hope that it continues to thrive for the next thousand years. Who knows Mad Cat may still be brewing beers and selling them on the market in the year 3021 too!
